History
The Stone Quarry
In the early 1900’s, West Hill was an industrial stone quarry which was largely barren of trees and other green spaces. After the quarry closed, nature returned and transformed a scarred landscape into the picturesque views we appreciate today. The “Stone Quarry” has become a cherished recreational destination for hiking, biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, exploration and storytelling by generations of Norwich children and families.
River Trails
1970s: The Greenway River Trails started out as the “City of Norwich Greenbelt Park Project”.
This was envisioned as a public, multi-use, run-walk-bike trail system along the Chenango River, within the city limits.
2006: Since its founding, the Chenango Greenway Conservancy has worked to toward developing multi-use trails for our community.
The original Greenbelt Park Project was the foundation of these efforts.
